Specialists from Lazurit-D restored the star of the famous spire of the Northern River Station in Moscow
Jewelers and cutters of Lazurit-D helped to restore the historical appearance of the main decoration of the spire of the Northern River Station in Moscow - a gilded star. The Northern River Station opened after renovation on September 5, 2020, the day of Moscow's 873rd anniversary. The restoration of the five-meter star took place for the first time in 80 years.
"Our jewelers and cutters were directly involved in the restoration of the star according to sketches and historical photographs. Specialists restored ornamental elements of the star - hammer and sickle, faceted and inserted seventeen gems, previously lost, into new casts. Each old stone was carefully removed, carefully washed and polished by hand. Now that the star is back in its place, the Ural gems shine with renewed vigor," said the representative of the company.
The gilded star has been decorating the 27-meter high spire of the Northern Railway Station since 1937. In the center of the star, on both sides, there is a hammer and sickle incrusted with 741 gems from the Urals; these are quartz (amethyst, rock crystal, citrine, smoky quartz), topaz, and beryls. The most impressive stone in terms of weight is the oval of rock crystal, weighing about 2,000 carats. According to the design, it was supposed to move out of the tower at the start of the navigation season, and then fall in at the end of the season. In fact, the mechanism was launched only a few times; however, now, after the restoration, the metal spire will work the way the architects had planned in the 1930s.
About the reconstruction of the Northern Railway Station
The building of the Northern River Station is a unique architectural monument built in the 1930s, that is why during restoration work special attention was paid to keeping most of the original interior elements and details while the lost parts were restored.
In the course of the renovation works all 17 berths of the station were reconstructed, 11 playgrounds and sports grounds were added to the park. The central element of the station was a multi-deck ship stylized as the steamship Sevryuga. Another such zone appeared in the southern part of the park. The Volga-Volga restaurant will open in the building of the station itself - in the same place where it was located in Soviet times, and an observation deck with a panoramic view of the Khimki Reservoir will operate on the roof. Also a historical waiting room and regularly updated exhibition of "Moscow transport" museum are made.
After opening the North River Station can simultaneously receive or dispatch up to four ships. Main navigation directions are St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Astrakhan, Rostov-on-Don, Volgograd, Ples, Cherepovets, Uglich, Kostroma, Samara, Saratov, Gorodets, Myshkin, Valaam, Tver, Tutaev. Moscow may again be called the port of five seas.
