Sputnik V, a Russian vaccine against coronavirus infection, became available in India.

"Sputnik V was the first coronavirus vaccine produced outside India to be used in India. The drug has become an important part of the world's largest population vaccination campaign against COVID-19," the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) reported.

The first vaccinations with the drug were given to Hyderabad residents after the first batch of Sputnik V was delivered to India on May 1. Delivery of the second batch of the drug to the country is expected by the end of this week, the fund said.

India is the leading manufacturing hub for the Russian vaccine. Agreements have been signed with major local pharmaceutical manufacturers - Gland Pharma, Hetero Biopharma, Panacea Biotec, Stelis Biopharma and Virchow Biotech. The total planned volume of vaccines for annual release is more than 850 million doses of the drug.

To date, Sputnik V has been registered in 65 countries with a combined population of over 3.2 billion. Post-vaccination studies in a number of countries demonstrate that Sputnik V is the safest and most effective vaccine against coronavirus. Sputnik V has the second highest number of approvals by state regulators in the world.
